A Guarda → Oia
Open Coast to the Monastery
A short, flat, seaside stage: 16.2 kilometres with 230 metres of ascent and 220 of descent, low difficulty. You leave A Guarda by the harbour and the seafront, and the route follows the Atlantic coast northwards, on dirt paths and boardwalks between rocks, with the coast road always near and the sea on your left all day. It is a wild coast of stone and wind, without big beaches, with the odd windmill and small villages perched above the water.
There is not much in the way of stops: Portecelo and the odd village with a bar that may be closed out of season, so water and some food come from A Guarda. Nor is there shade, and the sea sun burns even when it is not hot. The ground is comfortable, with short climbs over the headlands and stretches of dirt track beside the sea.
The finish enters Oia with its monastery of Santa María, a Cistercian abbey planted on the very shore, and its little harbour. Oia is a tiny village, with little more than what you need for a bed and dinner; arrive with your plans made.
Tips
Book in Oia before you set off: there are few beds and no large village nearby where you could improvise.
Sunscreen and a windproof: the coast between A Guarda and Oia is open to the Atlantic and the weather changes within the hour.
With such a short stage, leave without hurry and take time to stop at the coves and viewpoints.
The monastery at Oia can be visited inside depending on the time of year: ask when you arrive.
In stormy weather the coastal path gets washed by the waves and becomes dangerous: go inland then, beside the road.
