Caminha → A Guarda
The Ferry across the Miño
A short and special stage: just 12 kilometres with 110 metres of ascent and as much descent, low difficulty, but with a river to cross by boat. You leave Caminha down to the jetty, and the crossing of the Miño to the Galician bank, at Camposancos, is the moment of the day: a few minutes of open water with the hill of Santa Trega ahead and Portugal falling behind. The boat does not run at every hour or every day; it depends on the tide and the season, and you need to find out the day before.
If there is no boat, the alternative is to follow the Miño upstream to Vila Nova de Cerveira and cross by the bridge to Goián, in Tomiño, then come back down the Galician bank to A Guarda: it is much longer and on roads, so best avoided if there is any other option.
From Camposancos the route skirts the foot of Santa Trega, with the Celtic castro above, through pine woods and along walks with views of the river and the sea, and enters A Guarda by its fishing harbour. It is a town with everything, and as the stage is short there is plenty of afternoon left to climb the Trega and see the river mouth from the top.
Tips
Get your departure stamp in Caminha, stamps en route in Camposancos and at a bar on the climb to A Guarda, and the arrival stamp at the albergue or the town church.
Get to the jetty in good time with the money for the boat to hand; on the water it is cooler than it looks.
The climb up the hill of Santa Trega is a detour of a few kilometres with a lot of slope: do it without your pack from A Guarda.
A Guarda has seafood and a harbour: it is a stage end for eating slowly.
When you set foot in Galicia the clock goes forward an hour: adjust it as soon as you step off the boat.
