Viana do Castelo → Caminha
Windmills, Beaches and the Mouth of the Miño
A long and varied stage, the last one entirely in Portugal: 27.3 kilometres with 330 metres of ascent and as much descent, medium difficulty. You leave Viana do Castelo to the north, through streets and houses, and the route gradually nears the sea through Areosa and Carreço, where the stone windmills still stand above the coast and cobbled lanes run along the foot of the Santa Luzia hills.
The middle section alternates wooden boardwalks by the sea, rocky beaches and inland tracks, with Afife and its bars at the halfway point. Then you drop to Vila Praia de Âncora, with a beach and everything for eating and stocking up, and cross the river Âncora to continue through Moledo, with the coast drawing ever closer to Galicia.
The last kilometres enter Caminha, now at the mouth of the Miño, with the hill of Santa Trega opposite, on the far bank. It is a small town with a medieval square, a clock tower and what you need for a bed and dinner, and with the frontier feel that comes from having Galicia across the water.
Tips
Start early: it is long and the way out of Viana is urban and slow.
Vila Praia de Âncora is the place to eat and shop: afterwards, in Moledo and Caminha, there is less.
In Caminha find out that same afternoon how to cross the Miño the next day: at the town hall, the albergue or the jetty.
On the track sections at the foot of the hills there is little shade and plenty of stone: sturdy footwear and water to spare.
