Sahagún and the Real Camino
A flat stage across the Tierra de Campos: 23.5 kilometres with barely 120 metres of ascent and low difficulty. You leave Terradillos on earth paths through cereal fields and within a few kilometres pass Moratinos and San Nicolás del Real Camino, two small villages with wine cellars dug into the hillsides and the odd bar. Shortly afterwards you cross the river Valderaduey and leave Palencia for the province of León.
Sahagún comes around the halfway point, just after the hermitage of the Virgen del Puente, held to be the geographical centre of the Camino Francés. It is the big town of the day, with every service and a Mudéjar heritage worth some time: San Tirso, San Lorenzo, the arch of San Benito and what remains of the great monastery. This is the place to eat, get a stamp and buy anything you are missing.
You leave over the bridge across the Cea and, at Calzada del Coto, the route forks: to the right the Via Trajana towards Calzadilla de los Hermanillos; straight on the Real Camino Francés, which is the one this stage follows. It runs on a path parallel to the road, with a line of trees and rest areas, to Bercianos del Real Camino, a quiet village with just enough for dinner and a bed.
Tips
Set off in daylight and without rushing: the stage is flat and the first villages are close, but shade is scarce all day.
Make your long stop in Sahagún: it is the only sizeable town of the day and the place to eat and get a stamp on the way.
Watch for the fork at Calzada del Coto; if you take the Via Trajana you miss Bercianos and the stretch to Calzadilla is lonelier.
Bercianos is small and fills up in season: arrive with a booking or with the afternoon still ahead of you.
Carry water from Sahagún; the last ten kilometres run beside the road with little shade.
