Stage 17 · Camino Francés
Carrión de los Condes → Terradillos de los Templarios
Seventeen kilometres of the Via Aquitana
This is the most famous stage of the meseta for its emptiness: 26.6 kilometres with 110 metres of ascent and 90 of descent, medium difficulty, and a 17-kilometre stretch without a single service. You leave Carrión de los Condes across the river by the monastery of San Zoilo, pass the old abbey of Benevívere and from there take the Via Aquitana, the Roman road that ran from Bordeaux to Astorga, now a straight, wide gravel track that disappears into the horizon.
That stretch, between Carrión and Calzadilla de la Cueza, is flat and shadeless, with no villages, a few rest areas and the occasional seasonal refreshment stall you should not count on. It walks well if you keep a rhythm and carry water and something to eat, and it feels endless if you do not. Calzadilla de la Cueza appears suddenly, hidden in a hollow, and is the obvious place for lunch.
From Calzadilla about 10 gentler kilometres remain, on a track beside the road through Ledigos, which has a bar, to Terradillos de los Templarios, a small adobe village with little more than a bed and dinner. It lies close to the border with León.
Tips
Leave Carrión at dawn with a full bottle and food: in 17 kilometres there is no village, no reliable spring and no bar.
In hot weather do the 17 kilometres first thing in the morning, never at midday.
Get your departure stamp in Carrión, stamps on the way in Calzadilla de la Cueza and Ledigos, and your arrival stamp in Terradillos: the hostels and bars all stamp.
Terradillos is tiny and there is very little to buy: bring what you need for dinner and breakfast from Carrión.

Walk with me
It crosses where you are with the time, the daylight left, the water, the beds and the notice board. Three things at most: the ones that actually change your afternoon.

The things that do not expire: where the fountain actually is, which bar opens at six, where not to go in the rain.
None here yet. If you have just walked this stage, you know something tomorrow’s pilgrim does not.
