Frómista → Carrión de los Condes
Flat across Tierra de Campos
The flattest stage of the Camino so far: 19.3 kilometres with 70 metres of ascent and 60 of descent, low difficulty, across the Tierra de Campos of Palencia. You leave Frómista over a bridge across the railway and the road, and the route follows the senda de andadura, a gravel path parallel to the road, straight and shadeless, with waymarkers every so often. Población de Campos is less than an hour away and has a bar and a spring.
At Población you can choose: stay on the path beside the road through Revenga de Campos and Villarmentero de Campos, or turn off along the river Ucieza path, quieter and lined with poplars, which rejoins the main route at Villalcázar de Sirga. The two options are much the same length. Villalcázar de Sirga is worth the stop for the Templar Gothic church of Santa María la Blanca, with bars on the square.
The last kilometres return to the gravel path and reach Carrión de los Condes, a historic town with Romanesque churches, the monastery of San Zoilo and every service. As the stage is short, you arrive with time to look around and rest properly.
Tips
It is short and flat: no need for an early start, but in summer the sun on the shadeless path makes itself felt from early on.
The river Ucieza variant from Población de Campos is more pleasant than the roadside and barely adds any distance.
In Carrión buy bread, fruit and water for tomorrow: there is a very long section ahead with no services at all.
Get a stamp on the way in Villalcázar de Sirga, at the church or a bar, and your arrival stamp in Carrión, at any of its churches or hostels.
