Alto de Mostelares and the Pisuerga

The stage has a single climb and it comes right at the start: 24.7 kilometres with 190 metres of ascent and 230 of descent, medium difficulty. From Castrojeriz you cross the Odra valley on a footbridge and go straight up the Alto de Mostelares, a short but very steep pull that is best done early. On top there is a flat plateau with views over the whole valley, and then a descent to the Fuente del Piojo.

A long, level track follows to the hermitage of San Nicolás, beside the Itero bridge over the Pisuerga, a many-arched medieval bridge that marks the entry into Palencia. On the far side is Itero de la Vega, the first village with bars, about 11 kilometres from the start. From there the route continues on tracks through irrigated fields, flat and shadeless, to Boadilla del Camino, with its Gothic pillory and a good place to eat.

The finish is among the most pleasant on the meseta: you walk the towpath of the Canal de Castilla, water and poplars alongside, to the lock at Frómista. Frómista has every service and the church of San Martín, a jewel of the Romanesque.

Tips

Climb Mostelares in daylight but before the heat; the slope is short and head-on, and the wind hits you at the top.

Have breakfast in Itero de la Vega and lunch in Boadilla del Camino: they are the only villages on the stage.

Carry water between Itero and Boadilla, the most exposed section; the canal gives shade only in patches.

Get a stamp in Itero de la Vega or Boadilla and your arrival stamp in Frómista; San Martín stamps when it is open.

The descent from the Alto de Mostelares is very steep and concreted: it punishes the knees, especially on cold legs.

Walk with me

It crosses where you are with the time, the daylight left, the water, the beds and the notice board. Three things at most: the ones that actually change your afternoon.
