Stage 14 · Camino Francés
Hornillos del Camino → Castrojeriz
Before you set off
Nowhere to eat
Between Hornillos del Camino and Castrojeriz.
Hontanas, San Antón and Castrojeriz
A short stage of pure meseta: 20.1 kilometres with 180 metres of ascent and 200 of descent, low difficulty. You leave Hornillos climbing back onto the high plain, and the route continues along a long, open track with the Sanbol stream to one side as the only feature in the landscape. Hontanas is invisible until you are on top of it: the village hides in a dip halfway through the stage and is the first possible stop, with bars, a spring and a good spot for a late breakfast.
From Hontanas the route drops down the valley, first on track and then along a quiet stretch of road, to the ruins of the convent of San Antón, whose Gothic arch spans the road itself. It is a place to pause for a moment, even if nothing is open.
From San Antón you can already see Castrojeriz with its castle on the hilltop, but the village is longer than it looks: it stretches along the foot of the hill and takes a while to walk from end to end. There are churches, a collegiate church, bars, shops and plenty of accommodation for a quiet night.
Tips
Have breakfast in Hontanas without rushing: the stage is short and the village deserves it.
The stretch of road between Hontanas and San Antón carries little traffic, but keep to the edge and watch for cars.
Castrojeriz is long: check where your accommodation is before you go in so you do not have to walk back.
Get a stamp on the way in Hontanas and your arrival stamp in Castrojeriz; the bars and the collegiate church both stamp.
Between Hornillos and Hontanas there are about 10 kilometres of high plain with no water and no shade: set off with a full bottle.

Walk with me
It crosses where you are with the time, the daylight left, the water, the beds and the notice board. Three things at most: the ones that actually change your afternoon.

The things that do not expire: where the fountain actually is, which bar opens at six, where not to go in the rain.
None here yet. If you have just walked this stage, you know something tomorrow’s pilgrim does not.
