The longest straight on the plain
This is the most monotonous stage of the Camino Francés and one of the longest on the meseta: 26.8 kilometres with almost no height gain, along the earth path that accompanies the country road, with its row of trees and rest areas every few kilometres. The difficulty is medium only because of the distance and the lack of shade and places to stop.
El Burgo Ranero lies a little over seven kilometres in, with bars and shops: it is the last reliable stop for a long while, because from there to Reliegos there is nothing, only cereal, shallow lagoons in spring and open plain exposed to every wind. Reliegos, with its cellars dug into the hillside, is the natural place to eat and rest your feet before the final stretch.
The last six kilometres follow the same path to Mansilla de las Mulas, announced by its medieval walls and entered through the Puerta de Santiago. It is a town with every service, on the banks of the Esla, with an arcaded square and a pilgrim atmosphere in the afternoon.
Tips
Leave at dawn, especially in summer: the stretch between El Burgo Ranero and Reliegos has no shade and no reliable springs.
Fill your bottle and buy something in El Burgo Ranero: you will need it before Reliegos.
Change your pace and stop at the rest areas; the endless straight is more tiring than it looks.
Get a stamp on the way in El Burgo Ranero or Reliegos and your arrival stamp in Mansilla, at the hostel or the tourist office: the parchment asks for all four.
In wind or rain the plain shows no mercy: keep your windproof to hand even if you set off in sunshine.
Between El Burgo Ranero and Reliegos there are some thirteen kilometres with no bar and no reliable spring.
