Estella → Los Arcos
Irache and the Monjardín moorland
A pleasant stage in its first half and a lonely one in the second: 21.3 kilometres with 345 metres of ascent and 320 of descent, low difficulty. You leave Estella climbing towards Ayegui and, a little over half an hour on, reach the monastery of Irache and its wine fountain: one tap of wine and one of water, offered by the winery next door. Keep it to a short sip, there is a lot of day left.
From Irache the route climbs through woods and fields to Azqueta and then to Villamayor de Monjardín, a small village at the foot of a castle, with a bar and a spring. It is the last place with services on the stage: from here to Los Arcos there are some 12 kilometres of track through vineyards and cereal, flat and shadeless, with the odd roadside stall in season but nothing you can count on.
That final section is monotonous, long and exposed to sun and wind, and goes best with a full bottle and a steady pace. Los Arcos appears at the end, with its church of Santa María and an arcaded square to stop in. It is a small town with what you need to eat, sleep and shop.
Tips
Fill your bottle and buy something in Villamayor de Monjardín: the 12 kilometres to Los Arcos offer nothing you can rely on.
Leave early in summer: the second half has no shade and the heat on the track is felt.
The wine fountain at Irache is a nice stop, not a breakfast: water and bread first.
Get a stamp on the way in Villamayor de Monjardín and your arrival stamp in Los Arcos, at the church or the hostel.
