From Navarre to La Rioja via Viana
A long stage that is more about legs than hills: 27.6 kilometres with 295 metres of ascent and 350 of descent, medium difficulty. You leave Los Arcos on flat, shadeless tracks through cereal and vines, and it is a good while before you reach Sansol and, just across from it, Torres del Río, with its octagonal church of the Santo Sepulcro. They are the first villages with a bar and lie very close together, so make the most of them.
From Torres del Río the route climbs onto a moor of short ups and downs, with the road nearby and several crossings, before dropping into Viana. Viana is a large walled town with a calle Mayor, the church of Santa María and good places to eat; it comes about two thirds of the way through and is the natural midday stop.
After Viana you leave Navarre and enter La Rioja along a stretch of track and path beside the Las Cañas reservoir, and the approach to Logroño is long, through the outskirts. You cross the Ebro by the stone bridge and enter the old town, with calle Laurel, the Espolón and all the services of a regional capital.
Tips
Have breakfast in Sansol or Torres del Río and lunch in Viana: between villages there are long stretches with nothing.
Set out from Los Arcos with water: there are no reliable springs before Sansol and the terrain is open.
Between Torres del Río and Viana there are several road crossings: cross where the route indicates and look twice.
Get a stamp in Viana, at the church or the town hall, and your arrival stamp in Logroño at any hostel or the cathedral.
If the stage feels too long, Viana has accommodation and is a good place to split it.
Almost 28 kilometres of open, shadeless terrain: in summer, leave at dawn.
