Stage 5 · Camino Francés
Puente la Reina → Estella
Cirauqui and the Roman road
After crossing the Romanesque bridge, the route leaves Puente la Reina and immediately climbs a short, steep slope that wakes up the legs. It is 21.9 kilometres with 345 metres of ascent and 265 of descent, medium difficulty, over gentle hills of vineyards, olive groves and cereal. Mañeru, an hour in, is the first village with a bar.
Cirauqui then appears on its hilltop, a medieval village of steep streets that you enter through an arch and leave along a stretch of Roman road and a bridge from the same era. A descent follows to the river Salado, with its medieval bridge, and then a long climb to Lorca, another village with bars and a place to rest at mid-stage. The section between Lorca and Villatuerta is open track, without shade.
Villatuerta is already close to Estella, and the final kilometres drop along a path towards the river Ega, past the hermitage of San Miguel and into the Rúa quarter. Estella is a small city with Romanesque monuments, a market and every service: a place to arrive in daylight and stroll.
Tips
Get your departure stamp in Puente la Reina and one on the way in Cirauqui or Lorca: bars and churches stamp without any fuss.
There is no shade between Lorca and Villatuerta: a cap and a full bottle from Lorca if it is hot.
The streets of Cirauqui are steep and cobbled; they are slippery in the rain.
Estella deserves an afternoon: if you can, arrive early and save the walk around the old town for after your shower.

Walk with me
It crosses where you are with the time, the daylight left, the water, the beds and the notice board. Three things at most: the ones that actually change your afternoon.

The things that do not expire: where the fountain actually is, which bar opens at six, where not to go in the rain.
None here yet. If you have just walked this stage, you know something tomorrow’s pilgrim does not.
