Stage 3 · Santiago – Fisterra – Muxía
Olveiroa → Cee

Hospital, the fork and the sea
After yesterday's battering, this stage is walked with relief: 20 kilometres with 280 metres of ascent and 580 of descent, low difficulty. You leave Olveiroa among hórreos, cross the Xallas beside the reservoir and climb on a track to Hospital, about five kilometres in, the last hamlet with a bar for a long while. Just beyond Hospital stands the most important marker stone on the whole route: the fork. Left for Fisterra, right for Muxía. This stage takes the left.
From there on there is nothing until Cee: some fourteen kilometres on open hill tracks, with heather, wind and very little shade. You pass the chapel of San Pedro Mártir, with its fountain, and keep climbing gently to the Cruceiro da Armada, where the sea suddenly appears: the ría de Corcubión and, at the far end, Cape Fisterra. It is the moment of the stage.
The descent to Cee is long and steep, first on a stony path and then through streets, and it punishes the knees. Cee is a town with a harbour, a beach and everything you need, and since Corcubión is right next door, you can choose which of the two to sleep in.
Tips
Have breakfast and fill your bottle in Hospital, even though you have only walked five kilometres: there is nothing until Cee and the San Pedro Mártir fountain does not always run.
The hills between Hospital and the Cruceiro da Armada are open and windy; in fog or rain keep your waterproofs to hand, because there is nowhere to shelter.
The descent to Cee is hard on the knees: poles and short steps, especially on the stony section.
Cee has everything: it is the last big town before the lighthouse, so use it to restock.
En-route stamp in Hospital and the arrival stamp in Cee, at the hostel or at any church or bar in the centre.

Walk with me
It crosses where you are with the time, the daylight left, the water, the beds and the notice board. Three things at most: the ones that actually change your afternoon.

The things that do not expire: where the fountain actually is, which bar opens at six, where not to go in the rain.
None here yet. If you have just walked this stage, you know something tomorrow’s pilgrim does not.
