We do not say which is better: it depends on the days you have and what you want to see.

The long day to the Xallas

This is the longest stage of the route and it has to be taken seriously: 33.4 kilometres with 660 metres of ascent and 460 of descent, high difficulty. You leave Negreira by crossing the river Barcala and climbing towards Zas, up a wooded slope that goes well early in the morning. Then the terrain settles down: tracks and lanes between small hamlets, A Pena, Piaxe, Portocamiño, as far as Vilaserío, around the thirteenth kilometre, the first natural stop.

From Vilaserío to Maroñas and Santa Mariña the path runs across high, open country, with meadows, the odd eucalyptus plantation and little shade; this is the section that drags, with hamlets far apart and not always something open. Past the halfway point comes the climb along the flank of Monte Aro, the hardest slope of the day, by now on tired legs. From the top, in good weather, you can make out the Costa da Morte ahead.

From the high ground you drop towards Lago and the A Fervenza reservoir on the river Xallas, cross at Ponte Olveira and enter Olveiroa along its old sunken lane, the corredoira. Olveiroa is a hamlet of hórreos and stone houses, with a hostel and just enough for dinner and a bed; don't expect shops.

Tips

Set off at dawn and have breakfast in Negreira: it is a lot of kilometres and, after Vilaserío, the bars are few and open when they feel like it.

Carry water for the whole day and something to eat; between Maroñas and Olveiroa there are fountains, but nowhere you can rely on.

The high-country section and Monte Aro are open and shadeless: cap and sunscreen in summer, a windproof jacket the rest of the year.

Olveiroa has few places to eat and fills up in season: book a bed or arrive with hours of daylight to spare.

Get your en-route stamps in Vilaserío and Maroñas; after that you will find nowhere until the hostel.

It is 33.4 kilometres and the Monte Aro climb comes past the halfway point: if you are not going strong, split the stage at Vilaserío or Santa Mariña.

Walk with me

It crosses where you are with the time, the daylight left, the water, the beds and the notice board. Three things at most: the ones that actually change your afternoon.
