Through Dumbría and Ozón to A Barca

The direct variant to Muxía leaves Fisterra for another day, or for never: 32 kilometres with 480 metres of ascent and 700 of descent, high difficulty because of the distance, not the terrain, which is kind. You leave Olveiroa by crossing the Xallas and climbing to Hospital, where the route splits: the right-hand marker stone is the one for Muxía. From there you descend on tracks and a little road to Dumbría, around the ninth kilometre, a small municipal capital with a hostel and a bar, and the last reliable stop before the end.

The middle part runs through quiet, widely spaced inland hamlets: Trastufe, Senande, Quintáns, San Martiño de Ozón, where one of the longest hórreos in Galicia stands beside the old monastery. It is track country between meadows and eucalyptus, with gentle slopes you hardly notice, and the sea appears late, once past Ozón, from the heights above the ría de Camariñas.

The final kilometres drop to Os Muíños and Lourido beach, a strand open to the west, and enter Muxía along the promenade. The camino ends at the sanctuary of A Barca, on the point of the town, with the Virgin's stones and the sea breaking behind. Muxía is a town with everything you need for a rest.

Tips

Set off at dawn: 32 kilometres fill the whole day, and Muxía deserves to be seen in daylight.

In Hospital look carefully at the marker stone: the one for Muxía is on the right; take the left one and you will end up in Cee.

En-route stamps in Dumbría and in Quintáns or Ozón, wherever something is open; the Muxía hostel stamps the arrival.

The hórreo of San Martiño de Ozón is a step off the path and worth the five minutes.

If the stage feels too long, Dumbría has a hostel and you can split it there, even though the two halves will be very uneven.

Between Dumbría and Muxía bars are scarce and open when they feel like it: leave Dumbría with water and food for the rest of the day.

Walk with me

It crosses where you are with the time, the daylight left, the water, the beds and the notice board. Three things at most: the ones that actually change your afternoon.
