The Alto de la Cruz and Peón

The longest stage in Asturias and one of the hardest on the Camino del Norte: 30.5 kilometres with 650 metres of ascent and 660 of descent, difficult. You leave Villaviciosa on the road towards Amandi, among apple orchards and cider presses, and after a few kilometres the route leaves the valley and starts to climb through Niévares towards the Alto de la Cruz. It is a long haul, first on tarmac and then on a hill track, with the Villaviciosa estuary further and further behind you.

From the pass you drop to Peón, a small village with just enough for a mid-morning stop, and then climb again, this time to the Alto del Curbiellu, on a dirt path among chestnuts and eucalyptus. It is the second effort of the day and the one your legs feel most. After it comes a long descent towards the Deva valley.

From Deva the stage turns urban: park, pavements and avenues through Cabueñes and Viesques to the centre of Gijón, which you reach along San Lorenzo beach. Gijón is a big city with anything you could need, and the Cimavilla quarter, by the harbour, is the place to end the day.

Tips

Set off at first light: it is more than thirty kilometres with two passes, and the urban approach to Gijón drags.

Have breakfast and fill your bottle in Villaviciosa; nothing is reliably open before Peón, beyond the Alto de la Cruz.

Peón is the natural place for the first stamp along the way and for something to eat; the second can be in Deva or already in Gijón, since the parchment asks for two route stamps.

Use poles on both descents, which are long and have loose stones if it has rained.

Get your arrival stamp in Gijón the same day: the hostel, the churches in the centre and the tourist office all stamp.

At Casquita, shortly after Amandi, the Camino Primitivo branches off towards Oviedo: follow the arrows of the Norte towards Gijón.

Walk with me

It crosses where you are with the time, the daylight left, the water, the beds and the notice board. Three things at most: the ones that actually change your afternoon.
