Stage 18 · Camino del Norte
Sebrayo → Villaviciosa
A short walk to the cider capital
A transitional stage, short and flat: 10.5 kilometres with 120 metres of ascent and 130 of descent, easy. You leave Sebrayo on tracks between meadows and apple orchards and drop into the river valley, past small hamlets of manor houses and hórreos, with no hill worth the name. It is a couple of hours' walk that many pilgrims extend as far as Gijón or the next stop, but it also serves to arrive early and recover from the two long days behind you.
Villaviciosa has everything: a historic centre with the Romanesque church of Santa María de la Oliva, an arcaded square, shops and any number of cider houses, because it is the capital of Asturian cider. In apple season the streets smell of the press.
This is where the Camino divides. The Norte carries on towards Gijón and the coast; the Primitivo branches off towards Oviedo, by way of the monastery of Valdediós, to pass through San Salvador and continue to Lugo. It is a decision best made in advance, because both routes leave from Villaviciosa and the arrows separate on the way out of town.
Tips
No need for an early start; reach Villaviciosa in daylight and enjoy the afternoon.
There is nowhere to have breakfast in Sebrayo: bring something from Colunga for the first hours.
Decide before leaving Villaviciosa whether you continue on the Norte towards Gijón or on the Primitivo towards Oviedo, and watch the arrows carefully on the way out.
Get a stamp at the church of Santa María de la Oliva or at the hostel, and try the cider properly poured.

Walk with me
It crosses where you are with the time, the daylight left, the water, the beds and the notice board. Three things at most: the ones that actually change your afternoon.

The things that do not expire: where the fountain actually is, which bar opens at six, where not to go in the rain.
None here yet. If you have just walked this stage, you know something tomorrow’s pilgrim does not.
