Colunga, Priesca and a hamlet

A stage of 31 kilometres with 600 metres of ascent and 580 of descent, difficult, with the coast at the start and the Asturian countryside afterwards. You leave Ribadesella over the bridge across the Sella and climb through San Esteban de Leces, with the estuary below, before dropping to Vega and its long beach. It continues through Berbes and La Isla, with coves and cliffs, on paved tracks that go up and down without a break.

Colunga comes after two thirds of the way and is the last real stop: a town with bars, shops and a pharmacy, where you should buy everything for the evening and the night. From there the route leaves the sea and climbs through Pernús and La Llera to Priesca, with its pre-Romanesque church of San Salvador, from the tenth century, on a rise among meadows and apple orchards.

What is left is an easy descent to Sebrayo, a hamlet of a few houses with the pilgrim hostel and nothing else: no shop and no bar you can rely on. It is the end of the stage because the next sizeable town, Villaviciosa, is too far for the same day.

Tips

Get your departure stamp in Ribadesella, stamps along the way in Vega or La Isla and in Colunga, and your arrival stamp at the hostel in Sebrayo.

The cliff path of the first half has no shade; in hot weather leave at first light.

In Colunga fill your bottle and your pack: from there to Sebrayo there is nothing.

Priesca stands high up and the church is usually closed; the view and the cobbled path are worth the climb anyway.

There is no shop and no certain supper in Sebrayo: buy everything for the evening and for breakfast in Colunga.

Walk with me

It crosses where you are with the time, the daylight left, the water, the beds and the notice board. Three things at most: the ones that actually change your afternoon.
