Between Gijón and Avilés.

Monte Areo and the Avilés estuary

A medium stage and a kinder one than yesterday: 25.2 kilometres with 330 metres of ascent and 320 of descent, moderate difficulty. Leaving Gijón is long and urban, westwards along avenues and industrial estates, until the route climbs through Poago into Monte Areo. That is the only hill of the day worth the name, and up on top you walk for a good while on a track among pines and eucalyptus, with dolmens beside the path and views of both estuaries.

From the hill you drop to the parishes of Carreño, Tamón and their surroundings, with meadows, scattered houses and the odd village bar to stop at. From there the landscape changes: the second half of the stage crosses the industrial belt of Avilés, with the steelworks, the sheds, the railway lines and roads carrying heavy traffic. It is not pretty, but it is flat and well waymarked.

You enter Avilés along the estuary and over the bridge towards the old town, which comes as a surprise after the industry: arcaded streets, squares and palaces, and every service. It is a good place to spend the afternoon.

Tips

Leave in daylight: the way out of Gijón has many junctions and the waymarking is easily lost between blocks of flats and industrial estates.

Fill your bottle before climbing Monte Areo; there are no fountains up there and the hill section is long.

The bars in Tamón and around it are the last quiet stop before the industrial belt.

On the Avilés stretch there are road crossings and lorries: keep to the verge and pay attention, especially in the rain.

The old town of Avilés is worth a walk; get a stamp at the church or the town hall before they close.

Walk with me

It crosses where you are with the time, the daylight left, the water, the beds and the notice board. Three things at most: the ones that actually change your afternoon.
