Triana, Itálica and the Guadalquivir plain

The Vía de la Plata leaves the cathedral of Sevilla and crosses the Guadalquivir by the Triana bridge. It is the longest of the first stages and at the same time the gentlest: 22.8 kilometres, almost flat, with only 90 metres of ascent and low difficulty. You go through Triana along calle Castilla, leave Camas behind on pavements and past an industrial estate, and climb barely at all onto the edge of the Aljarafe to reach Santiponce, where the ruins of Itálica and the monastery of San Isidoro del Campo stand. It is the last place with bars and shops all morning.

From Santiponce the route drops down to the plain and follows dirt tracks through fields of cereal, sunflowers and the occasional olive grove, without a tree to cast shade for many kilometres. The going is easy, but in summer the sun beats down from mid-morning and there is no fountain you can count on.

The final kilometres cross a stream at a ford and come into Guillena along a straight track, with the village in view for a good while. Guillena is a large village with every service and an easy approach as far as the main square.

Tips

Get a stamp in the cathedral or in any church in the centre before you set off: it is the first stamp on your parchment and the departure stamp for the stage.

From May to September leave at first light or before; the plain after Santiponce has no shade and at midday it is an oven.

Have breakfast and fill your bottle in Santiponce: there is nothing until Guillena, neither bar nor fountain.

If you have time, Itálica is right on the route; it is worth the visit even if it costs you an hour of the cool of the morning.

Carry a cap, sun cream and at least two litres of water from the very first day: this is how the whole south will be.

The ford before Guillena carries water after rain; if it is running high you have to go round by the road.

Walk with me

It crosses where you are with the time, the daylight left, the water, the beds and the notice board. Three things at most: the ones that actually change your afternoon.
