The first hills of the dehesa
A short stage that starts to climb: 17.6 kilometres with 320 metres of ascent and very little descent, low difficulty. You leave Guillena on tracks between orange groves and market gardens, cross the road and at once the landscape changes: dirt tracks that run into estates of holm oak, cork oak and pasture, the first dehesa of the route, with livestock and gates that must be left shut.
The climb is long but easy-angled, with no slope hard enough to hurt, along a wide track, stony in places, that gains height towards the sierra. There is no village and no bar between Guillena and Castilblanco, so you set your own rhythm. The only landmarks are the gates of the estates and the odd farmstead in the distance.
The last section runs beside the road and enters Castilblanco de los Arroyos at the lower end, climbing up to the centre. It is a village with everything, quiet, already at the gates of the Sierra Norte, and a good place to rest before tomorrow's long stage.
Tips
Buy whatever you need for the morning in Guillena: there is nowhere to stop before Castilblanco.
Shut every gate you open; the animals roam loose on these estates and that is what is asked of you in return for passing through.
In summer walk at night or at dawn: the track is open and from eleven o'clock there is no shade left.
Stock up properly in Castilblanco; tomorrow is almost 30 kilometres with no services.
