Stage 4 · Camino Primitivo
Tineo → Pola de Allande
Before you set off
No water, no food
Between Tineo and Tineo. — Leave with 2.2 litres of water.
Obona, Campiello and the Allande valley
This is the longest stage of the Asturian section and one of the most demanding: 27.5 kilometres with 650 metres of ascent and 880 of descent, high difficulty. You leave Tineo climbing on a track towards the Alto de Piedratecha, among pine woods and pasture, and the route stays high for a good while, with wide views and very few houses.
About a third of the way in, a short detour leads to the monastery of Santa María la Real de Obona, Romanesque and half in ruins, which is worth the minutes it costs. Then come Campiello and Borres, the only hamlets with a bar all day and the place to eat, fill your bottle and get a stamp. From there the path climbs through Samblismo towards the sierra and then descends long and steep into the Nisón valley, on dirt and stone paths among oaks, with slippery sections when it rains.
The descent is the part that tires you most: many kilometres downhill on legs that are already heavy. Pola de Allande, the capital of the municipality, is a small, quiet town with what you need to sleep, eat and shop, and with the Cienfuegos palace on the hill above keeping watch over the village.
Tips
Leave at dawn: it is 27.5 kilometres with a lot of descent at the end, and daylight and strength run out together.
Buy what you need for the day in Tineo: between Campiello and Pola de Allande there is nothing reliably open.
Take poles for the descent to the valley; the ground is stone and roots and slippery in the rain.
Book a bed in Pola de Allande in high season: accommodation is scarce and fills up.
If you want to walk the Hospitales route, the turn-off is shortly after Borres, before the descent to Pola de Allande: anyone sleeping in Pola will not be taking it.

Walk with me
It crosses where you are with the time, the daylight left, the water, the beds and the notice board. Three things at most: the ones that actually change your afternoon.

The things that do not expire: where the fountain actually is, which bar opens at six, where not to go in the rain.
None here yet. If you have just walked this stage, you know something tomorrow’s pilgrim does not.
