The climb to La Espina

This is the shortest of the Asturian stages, 19.9 kilometres, but with 830 metres of ascent and only 460 of descent: you are climbing almost all day. The difficulty is moderate, and what defines it is the opening ramp, which starts in Salas along the Nonaya valley, gentle at first beside the river and then steeper and steeper on track and dirt path among chestnuts and oaks, up to the Alto de La Espina.

Bodenaya, shortly before the top, is a small hamlet where many stop to catch their breath. La Espina, already at the top and a little past the midpoint of the stage, is a roadside village with bars and shops, the place to eat something and get a stamp before the final section.

From there the route rolls across the uplands of the municipality of Tineo, with meadows, mountain pastures and long views over the sierras of western Asturias, on tracks and short stretches of road between hamlets such as El Pedregal and La Pereda. Tineo appears perched on the hillside and you enter it up its steep streets. It is a town with every service and a good place to rest and shop without hurry.

Tips

Have breakfast in Salas and leave early: the climb to La Espina is long and in summer the sun beats down on the second half.

Carry water from Salas. There are fountains in the valley, but on the upper part of the climb there is nothing until Bodenaya.

La Espina has bars and shops: stop there and get your stamp while you are at it.

Poles and short steps on the climb. It is not technical, but it is long and muddy in places after rain.

Walk with me

It crosses where you are with the time, the daylight left, the water, the beds and the notice board. Three things at most: the ones that actually change your afternoon.
