Tui → Porriño
Along the Louro to O Porriño
The first full stage in Galicia, short and easy: 16.5 kilometres with 180 metres of ascent and 170 of descent, low difficulty. You leave Tui past the cathedral and through the old town, heading down towards the river, and soon cross the Ponte das Febres, a small bridge with its cruceiro where tradition says Saint Telmo fell ill. Then come tracks and paths through riverside woodland and the villages of the parish of Ribadelouro, with more shade than you will have later.
Halfway through, the route nears the As Gándaras industrial estate, and here you have to decide. The historic line crosses the estate in a straight line: kilometres of warehouses, lorries and tarmac without a scrap of shade. The variant that follows the river Louro, signed as complementary, runs on paths and tracks beside the water, almost flat, and reaches O Porriño through its pleasantest side. Almost everyone chooses the river route, and rightly so.
O Porriño is an industrial town with every service and a small centre around the church and the town hall. It is not the prettiest town on the Camino, but it has everything and you rest well.
Tips
Get your departure stamp at Tui cathedral or at the albergue; en route, at any bar in Ribadelouro or on the way into O Porriño, and the arrival stamp at the albergue or the town hall.
The Louro river detour is signposted as you reach the industrial estate: watch for the arrows and do not follow the road out of habit.
Carry water from Tui: between the Ponte das Febres and O Porriño there are few places to fill up.
It is short: there is no need for an early start, and you can give the morning to Tui cathedral before leaving.
