Rubiães → Tui
Valença, the Miño and Tui
This is the stage that changes country. It is 19.4 kilometres with 230 metres of ascent and 420 of descent, low difficulty, almost all downhill. You leave Rubiães on tracks and lanes between villages of the concelho of Paredes de Coura, some stretches of earth and others of cobbles, and pass through Fontoura and Paços, where there is a café or two for the first stop. It is a landscape of farms, vines and woodland, with no difficulty at all.
From the halfway point the ground levels out and the route approaches Valença, with more tarmac and built-up areas. It is worth going into the fortress, a walled enclosure with streets of shops and views over the Miño, and stopping there for lunch or at least for a stamp. It is also the place to buy anything you are missing before the crossing.
From the fortress you drop to the river and cross the Miño by the international iron bridge, on the side pavement beside the road and the railway line. On the other bank you are in Galicia: Tui climbs uphill to its cathedral, fortress and church in one, and has everything for eating and sleeping.
Tips
Get a stamp in Valença, inside the fortress, and another in Tui: it is the only stage with stamps in two countries.
The international bridge is crossed on foot along the pavement without any trouble, but it is long and busy with traffic: do not stop in the middle for the photo.
In Tui the cathedral stamps and is worth visiting; the old town is small and can be seen in a short while.
If you feel like it, the stage lends itself to sleeping in Valença and crossing in the morning; both towns have everything.
When you cross into Tui the clock goes forward an hour: bear it in mind for daylight and opening hours from here on.
