Santo Domingo de la Calzada → Belorado
From La Rioja into Castile
A flat transition stage that leaves La Rioja and enters Castilla y León: 22.7 kilometres with 180 metres of ascent and 170 of descent, low difficulty. You leave Santo Domingo over the bridge across the Oja, and the route follows tracks through cereal to Grañón, the last village in La Rioja, set on high ground, with a church, a bar and a good pilgrim atmosphere.
Shortly afterwards you pass the Castilla y León sign and enter Redecilla del Camino, already in Burgos province. From here the route runs almost the whole time beside the main road, on a parallel track, with villages every few kilometres: Castildelgado, Viloria de Rioja, where Santo Domingo was born, and Villamayor del Río. They are small villages with the odd bar that is not always open, and the landscape is treeless rolling cereal.
The last kilometres are more of the same, with the noise of lorries alongside, until Belorado appears on the bank of the Tirón beneath a hill with castle ruins. Belorado is a large village with an arcaded square, shops and everything you need to sleep and eat.
Tips
Have breakfast in Grañón: it is the liveliest village of the stage and a little over an hour away.
In the villages between Redecilla and Belorado do not count on finding a bar open: carry something to eat.
The route runs beside the road almost all day: do not cross it away from the marked crossings.
Get a stamp on the way in Grañón or Redecilla del Camino and your arrival stamp in Belorado, at the hostel or the parish church.
