Nájera → Santo Domingo de la Calzada
Towards the cathedral rooster
A short, flat stage of cereal and wide horizons: 21 kilometres with 250 metres of ascent and 180 of descent, low difficulty. You leave Nájera through the old town, climbing behind the monastery over the red cliffs, and in a little over an hour reach Azofra on tracks through vines and fields. Azofra is a village with a bar and a spring, and the best place for breakfast, because the loneliest section comes next.
From Azofra the route follows a long, straight, shadeless track, climbing slowly to Cirueña, beside a golf course and a housing estate that looks empty. There is little in Cirueña, but it will do for a rest, and from there a gentle descent through cereal fields brings you to Santo Domingo de la Calzada.
Santo Domingo has been a pilgrim town since the eleventh century, with the cathedral where the rooster and hen of the miracle live, a well-kept historic centre and every service. As the stage is short, you arrive with time to see it.
Tips
Fill your bottle in Azofra: there is a good stretch of open track with nothing before Cirueña.
Almost no shade the whole stage; in summer leave early and wear a cap.
Go into the cathedral of Santo Domingo and look for the henhouse: it is the most famous story on the Camino.
Get your arrival stamp at the cathedral or the hostel, which usually have their own stamp.
