Stage 25 · Vía de la Plata y Camino Sanabrés
Zamora → Montamarta
Before you set off
No water, no food
Between Zamora and Montamarta. — Leave with 2.3 litres of water.
A short start towards the Esla
After two long days, this one is walked at leisure: 19 kilometres with 180 metres of ascent and 160 of descent, low difficulty. You leave Zamora through the old town, past the cathedral and the castle, and cross the northern districts before quitting the city on dirt tracks parallel to the main road. The first stretch is all suburbs and not of much interest, but it passes quickly.
Roales del Pan lies about seven kilometres out and is the only village in between: a fountain, a bar of sorts and little else. From there the route follows farm tracks through cereal, with slight rises and falls and almost no shade, very solitary and very quiet. It is a stage of open horizons and big skies, the Castilla of wheat fields.
Montamarta appears at the tail of the Ricobayo reservoir, which here holds back the waters of the Esla, with the hermitage of the Virgen del Castillo on a rocky spur beside the water. It is a small village with what you need to sleep, eat and buy a few things, and the afternoon is long enough to walk down to the shore and see the hermitage in the low light.
Tips
There is no need for a very early start, but leave in the cool: almost the whole way is open track without shade.
Fill your bottle in Roales del Pan; there is no other reliable place before Montamarta.
Make the most of the morning in Zamora if you did not see it yesterday: a stamp at the cathedral and two or three Romanesque churches fit in before you leave.
Do your shopping in Montamarta as soon as you arrive; village shops close early.

Walk with me
It crosses where you are with the time, the daylight left, the water, the beds and the notice board. Three things at most: the ones that actually change your afternoon.

It checks GPS every 6 min while you keep it open. GPS drains the battery: if yours is low, switch it off.

The things that do not expire: where the fountain actually is, which bar opens at six, where not to go in the rain.
None here yet. If you have just walked this stage, you know something tomorrow’s pilgrim does not.
