Stage 3 · Enlace con el Camino Francés (Astorga)
Alija del Infantado → La Bañeza
Before you set off
No water, no food
Between La Bañeza and La Bañeza. — Leave with 1.8 litres of water.
The Jamuz valley to La Bañeza
An easy stage, 22.5 kilometres with 160 metres of ascent and 110 of descent, low difficulty, following the river Jamuz northwards. You leave Alija del Infantado on dirt tracks among crops and poplar stands, and after some four kilometres reach Quintana del Marco, the first village, with a fountain and some signs of life. The route continues along the valley floor, almost without any gradient, alternating farm track and very quiet local road.
Around halfway Villanueva de Jamuz appears, with its square-towered castle, and afterwards Santa Elena de Jamuz, both with a fountain and sometimes a bar. They are villages of adobe and brick, with cellars dug into the slopes, in a flat landscape of cereal, vines and market gardens beside the river. Shade is scarce, but the ground presents no difficulty at all.
La Bañeza announces itself with its warehouses and outskirts, and you come in along wide streets to the arcaded Plaza Mayor. It is a small city with every service, good bars and a reputation for its festivals: the carnival and Holy Week. There is a hostel and accommodation to spare, and it is the best place on the link to shop and rest.
Tips
Water from Alija and at the fountains in the villages; between Santa Elena and La Bañeza there is nothing.
Leave early in summer: the valley is open and at midday there is nowhere to take shelter.
Get a stamp along the way in Quintana del Marco or Villanueva de Jamuz and your arrival stamp in La Bañeza, at the hostel or in any of its churches.

Walk with me
It crosses where you are with the time, the daylight left, the water, the beds and the notice board. Three things at most: the ones that actually change your afternoon.

The things that do not expire: where the fountain actually is, which bar opens at six, where not to go in the rain.
None here yet. If you have just walked this stage, you know something tomorrow’s pilgrim does not.
