Eucalyptus, Salceda and Santa Irene

A comfortable stage with no surprises: 19.3 kilometres with 320 metres of ascent and 380 of descent, low difficulty. You leave Arzúa through the neighbourhood of As Barrosas and the path soon dips into a small valley before climbing again to Preguntoño, in a see-saw of gentle rises and dips that repeats all day. The ground is dirt trail among oaks and eucalyptus, alternating with paved lanes between hamlets: A Calzada, A Calle, Boavista.

Around the midpoint you pass through Salceda, a roadside village with bars and shops, the natural stop to eat and get a stamp. Then the route draws close to the road and crosses it repeatedly between A Brea and Santa Irene, where there is a chapel, an old fountain and a traditional hostel beside a eucalyptus wood that gives shade on the final stretch.

A Rúa is the last hamlet and from there a flat path leads to O Pedrouzo, the capital of the municipality of O Pino. It is a roadside town with every service, very geared to pilgrims, and it fills with people at the end of the day.

Tips

Have breakfast in Arzúa or Preguntoño and carry water: there are fountains and bars one after another, but the eucalyptus section is long and has nothing.

In Salceda get a transit stamp and eat; it is the place with most services on the stage.

The trail surface of roots and mud calls for closed shoes, especially after rain.

In summer leave early: the Francés is packed and the mid-morning bars have queues.

The path crosses the N-547 several times between A Brea and Santa Irene: always use the marked crossings and never take shortcuts along the road.

Walk with me

It crosses where you are with the time, the daylight left, the water, the beds and the notice board. Three things at most: the ones that actually change your afternoon.
