The Senda da Auga above the Estuary

A short stage and one of the pleasantest on the whole Coastal route: 15.4 kilometres with 300 metres of ascent and 350 of descent, low difficulty. You leave Vigo through the upper part of the city, with an urban climb that is the worst of the day, and at Teis you pick up the Senda da Auga, the old line of the city's water supply, turned into an almost flat footpath along the hillside.

The path runs for kilometres above the Vigo estuary, through woodland, allotments and villages, with the Rande bridge and the island of San Simón always in view. There are no cars, there is shade and there are benches; what there are not are bars until the very end, so water and a sandwich come from Vigo. It is a stretch for walking slowly and looking.

The finish descends on tracks and streets to Redondela, where the Coastal variant joins the Central beneath the iron railway viaducts. From here on the Camino is a single route. Redondela has everything, with plenty of pilgrim life.

Tips

Have breakfast in Vigo before climbing to the path: it is the only part of the stage with services.

The way out of Vigo is signposted but it is city walking: keep an eye on the arrows in the streets and do not trust the logic of the map.

The final descent to Redondela is short and steep: mind your knees after so much flat ground.

Redondela fills up where the two variants meet: book ahead or arrive early.

Walk with me

It crosses where you are with the time, the daylight left, the water, the beds and the notice board. Three things at most: the ones that actually change your afternoon.
