Arriving at the Obradoiro

The last stage is long and has more climbing than you expect: 24.3 kilometres with 400 metres of ascent and 300 of descent, medium difficulty. You leave Padrón through Iria Flavia, with its collegiate church and the cemetery where Camilo José Cela is buried, and climb gently to the sanctuary of A Escravitude. Then the route runs close to the main road for a good while, with bars in Picaraña and Faramello, and crosses it several times: look carefully.

Halfway through you enter the concello of Teo by Rúa de Francos and villages of track and tarmac, with short climbs that add up, until you reach O Milladoiro, a big modern suburb with the last services before the city. From Agro dos Monteiros you see the cathedral for the first time, and from there you descend towards Santiago through A Rocha and Conxo.

The urban approach is long, along streets with traffic, and ends at the Porta Faxeira and the rúa do Franco, which opens onto Obradoiro square in front of the cathedral. It is worth arriving slowly. The Pilgrim's Office, where you request the Compostela with your stamped credential, is close to the square, and Santiago has everything at any hour.

Tips

Get your departure stamp in Padrón before setting off: the final stage of the parchment needs its four stamps like all the others.

Get stamps en route at A Escravitude or at a bar in Picaraña and in O Milladoiro, and the arrival stamp at the cathedral or at the Pilgrim's Office, which also stamps.

Start early: it is long, with climbs, and the Pilgrim's Office has queues in high season; if you arrive mid-morning, go there first and then to the square.

The pilgrims' mass is at midday in the cathedral and backpacks are not allowed inside; there are left-luggage places nearby.

The selfie in front of the cathedral with the last stamp in place is the one that unlocks your parchment: take it calmly.

Walk with me

It crosses where you are with the time, the daylight left, the water, the beds and the notice board. Three things at most: the ones that actually change your afternoon.
