The Sé, the Suburbs and Vairão

The Central Portuguese Way leaves Porto from the cathedral, the Sé, high above the old town, where you should get your first stamp. It is a long stage, 26.6 kilometres with 320 metres of ascent in short climbs and medium difficulty, and almost entirely urban: you leave the centre along cobbled streets and cross the northern districts until the city turns into outskirts, with avenues, industrial estates and housing areas following one another with little respite.

Around the halfway point, already in the concelho of Maia, tarmac and cobbles still rule, though allotments, vines and the odd village begin to appear. It is the kind of ground that punishes the feet more than the legs, so wear good shoes and stop in time. Services are plentiful along the whole first part: cafés, bakeries and shops in every district.

The final kilometres come out into open country at last, now in the concelho of Vila do Conde, and reach Vairão, a small rural parish gathered around its old Benedictine monastery, which today takes in pilgrims. It is a quiet place, with little more than what you need for dinner and a bed. Many walkers prefer to skip the first suburban kilometres by metro; that is a legitimate choice, but the whole stage has its point.

Tips

Get your stamp at the Sé before setting off: it is the first stamp on the parchment and the departure stamp for the stage. Stamps en route are easy to find in any church or café in the northern districts.

Buy in Porto whatever you need for the first few days; Vairão has little and it closes early.

Almost everything is cobbles and tarmac: wear cushioned footwear and change your socks halfway if you sweat.

Set off in daylight so you can cross the outskirts and their junctions calmly; there is no need for a very early start, but do leave before the heat.

If you plan to sleep in Vairão, arrive with a plan: there are few beds and no fallback nearby.

A stage almost entirely on tarmac and cobbles with traffic: take great care at the junctions on the outskirts of Porto and Maia.

Walk with me

It crosses where you are with the time, the daylight left, the water, the beds and the notice board. Three things at most: the ones that actually change your afternoon.
