Órbigo, Santo Toribio and Astorga

You leave San Martín on the same roadside path as yesterday, some seven flat kilometres to Hospital de Órbigo, where the Camino crosses the river on one of its longest and most famous bridges: the Paso Honroso, medieval, of stone and a whole string of arches, the one on which Suero de Quiñones challenged the knights of half Europe in 1434. There are bars and shops, and this is where you have a proper breakfast.

At the far end of the village the route forks. To the right the way through Villares de Órbigo and Santibáñez de Valdeiglesias, on earth, among vegetable plots, holm oaks and the odd short climb; straight on the roadside variant, shorter and worse. The first is well worth it: it is the most pleasant stretch of the day and ends at the cross of Santo Toribio, with Astorga in view and the Montes de León behind.

From the cross you drop to San Justo de la Vega, cross the Tuerto and face the final hill, short but serious, which brings you into Astorga through the gate in the walls. It is 23.7 kilometres with 250 metres of ascent and medium difficulty. Astorga has everything: a cathedral, Gaudí's Episcopal Palace, cocido maragato and mantecadas.

Tips

Have breakfast in Hospital de Órbigo and fill your bottle there: between Santibáñez and San Justo there is a long stretch with nothing.

Take the Villares and Santibáñez path at the fork in Hospital: a couple of kilometres more, but earth and shade instead of a road verge.

Get your departure stamp in San Martín, stamps on the way in Hospital de Órbigo and Santibáñez, and your arrival stamp in Astorga, at the hostel or the cathedral.

The final hill into Astorga feels long at the end of the day; save some water and do not rush it.

Buy what you need in Astorga: from here on the villages are small and mountainous.

Walk with me

It crosses where you are with the time, the daylight left, the water, the beds and the notice board. Three things at most: the ones that actually change your afternoon.
