Stage 2 · Camino Francés
Roncesvalles → Zubiri
Beech woods to the Puente de la Rabia
After the Pyrenees, this stage is walked on legs that are still heavy but with no nasty surprises: 21.5 kilometres with 217 metres of ascent and 633 of descent, low difficulty. You leave Roncesvalles through beech and oak woodland on a flat, shaded path that soon brings you to Burguete, the village of big white houses that Hemingway made famous, with bars and a shop for breakfast.
Next comes Espinal, another village with services, and from there the route climbs to the Mezkiritz pass and drops through woods to Bizkarreta and Lintzoain, two small, quiet hamlets. It is track and path terrain, muddy after rain, and the climbs are short. Lintzoain is the last place to fill your bottle before the Erro pass.
The climb to the Erro pass is gentle, through woodland, and from the top you descend to Zubiri. You enter the village over the Puente de la Rabia, a medieval bridge across the Arga to which tradition attributes cures, and Zubiri has what you need to eat, shop and sleep.
Tips
Have breakfast in Burguete or Espinal: they are the liveliest villages of the stage and both fall in the first half.
Fill your bottle in Lintzoain; there is nothing else before Zubiri except the Erro pass.
In the rain the forest mud between Espinal and Bizkarreta clings to your boots; gaiters or patience.
If you would rather sleep somewhere smaller, Larrasoaña is a little over five kilometres beyond Zubiri.
The descent from the Erro pass to Zubiri is long, steep and covered in loose stone: poles, and go easy on the knees.

Walk with me
It crosses where you are with the time, the daylight left, the water, the beds and the notice board. Three things at most: the ones that actually change your afternoon.

The things that do not expire: where the fountain actually is, which bar opens at six, where not to go in the rain.
None here yet. If you have just walked this stage, you know something tomorrow’s pilgrim does not.
