Stage 27 · Camino Francés
O Cebreiro → Triacastela
Alto do Poio and down to Triacastela
After the great climb, a day of ridges and descent: 20.8 kilometres with 230 metres of ascent and 800 of descent, low difficulty. You leave O Cebreiro on track and path, often in fog, through Liñares and over the Alto de San Roque, with its statue of a pilgrim battling the wind, and continue through Hospital da Condesa and Padornelo. This is Galician mountain country, pasture, cattle and stone walls, with the road never far away.
The only real climb is the Alto do Poio, short but very steep, at about kilometre nine: there is a bar at the top and it is the highest point of the Camino in Galicia. From there it is all downhill, through Fonfría, O Biduedo, Fillobal and As Pasantes, slate hamlets with the occasional bar, on path and track among old chestnut trees, with one long steep section the knees will notice.
At Ramil, a huge chestnut tree announces Triacastela, already below in the Oribio valley. It is a long, single-street village with enough hostels, shops and bars. The Camino divides here: to the left the Samos route with its monastery, to the right San Xil, shorter and over the hill. It is worth deciding before you leave Triacastela.
Tips
Set off warmly dressed and in daylight: dawn in O Cebreiro is foggy and cold almost all year, and the route soon drops to a kinder temperature.
Have breakfast in Hospital da Condesa or at the Alto do Poio; after that there are bars in nearly every hamlet, though not all open out of season.
Poles for the descent from Fonfría to Triacastela: it is long, stony and muddy in the rain.
Get your departure stamp in O Cebreiro, stamps on the way at the Alto do Poio and in Fonfría, and your arrival stamp in Triacastela: the parchment's four stamps come easily today.

Walk with me
It crosses where you are with the time, the daylight left, the water, the beds and the notice board. Three things at most: the ones that actually change your afternoon.

It checks GPS every 6 min while you keep it open. GPS drains the battery: if yours is low, switch it off.
