Eucalyptus woods to O Pedrouzo

A short, gentle stage, 19.3 kilometres with 320 metres of ascent and low difficulty, designed to bring you rested to the eve of Santiago. You leave Arzúa along the Rúa do Carme and the route soon enters woodland: oaks at first and eucalyptus for most of the rest, on earth tracks and shaded corredoiras, with hamlets every few kilometres, As Barrosas, Preguntoño, A Calzada, A Calle, all of them with a bar.

The first half is an easy up and down, with streams crossed on stepping stones and the odd stretch beside the main road. Salceda, at around kilometre eleven, is the best-provided stop, and from there the route goes on through A Brea and Santa Irene, with its chapel and its spring, alternating woodland and road crossings as far as A Rúa.

O Pedrouzo is not on the route: at A Rúa you have to turn off for a few minutes along the road to reach the village, which is actually called Arca and is the seat of the municipality of O Pino. It has every service and the atmosphere of the last night; many pilgrims sleep here before Santiago.

Tips

No need for an early start: it is short and shaded; set off in daylight and arrive early to rest.

Stop in Salceda halfway for your en-route stamp and something to eat.

In the rain the woodland sections are muddy and the stepping stones across the streams are slippery.

In O Pedrouzo get your credential ready for tomorrow: check that it has the two daily stamps since Sarria.

The turn-off to O Pedrouzo goes left at A Rúa; if you follow the arrows straight on you will miss it and have to come back.

Walk with me

It crosses where you are with the time, the daylight left, the water, the beds and the notice board. Three things at most: the ones that actually change your afternoon.
