Santillana del Mar → Comillas
Cóbreces, Ruiloba and El Capricho
A gentle stage of 22.3 kilometres with 330 metres of ascent and 340 of descent, moderate difficulty, through the Cantabria of meadows and villages of old manor houses. You leave Santillana del Mar on paved lanes between farms and pass through Oreña and Caborredondo, all of it rolling and with no serious hills, the sea appearing now and then on your right and cows beside you.
Halfway through the stage you reach Cóbreces, with the Cistercian abbey of Viaceli, a neo-Gothic church of red stone and bars to rest in. The route then continues through Ruiloba and Concha, long straggling villages with churches and the palaces of returned emigrants, and a short climb before you look out over the Comillas estuary.
You come into Comillas through the upper part of town, with the Universidad Pontificia and the Palacio de Sobrellano above the streets and Gaudí's El Capricho off to one side. Comillas is a summer resort with a cobbled old town, a beach and every service, and it deserves a whole afternoon.
Tips
Get your departure stamp in Santillana, stamps along the way in Cóbreces and Ruiloba, and your arrival stamp in Comillas: the hostel and the parish church both stamp.
Fill your bottle as you leave; before Cóbreces the villages have fountains but no bar you can count on.
Almost all of it is paved lane: vary your pace and stop every couple of hours.
El Capricho and Sobrellano charge admission; check the times when you arrive, as there are queues in summer.
