Markina-Xemein → Gernika
Zenarruza, Munitibar and the tree
A long stage, but a kinder one than yesterday: 25.2 kilometres with 760 metres of ascent and 790 of descent, moderate difficulty, with the climbs spread out. You leave Markina-Xemein following the river Artibai to Iruzubieta and Bolibar, the village of Simón Bolívar's ancestors, which has a museum and a quiet square for the first rest.
From Bolibar a cobbled way climbs to the collegiate church of Zenarruza, a monastery on high ground with a cloister and a community of monks who stamp credentials and welcome pilgrims. It is the loveliest place on the stage. The path then drops to Munitibar, halfway through the day, with bars and a shop, and a run of ups and downs begins on tracks and local roads among farmsteads, pine woods and meadows, through Mendata and Marmiz, with no real villages.
The final descent enters Gernika through the Ajangiz district. Gernika has everything: the Casa de Juntas with the tree under which the lords of Bizkaia swore their oaths, the Monday market and the memory of the bombing of 1937. It is worth arriving with time to see it.
Tips
Get your departure stamp in Markina-Xemein and stamps along the way at Zenarruza and Munitibar: they are the two finest route stamps of the day.
There is little between Munitibar and Gernika; fill your bottle and eat something before going on.
The stretches of local road have no verge: walk on the left and wear something visible.
In Gernika the Casa de Juntas and the tree can be visited free of charge; check the opening times when you arrive.
