Part one · For the pilgrim

Before you set off

What you look at from home, deciding the trip.

  1. The 7 routes Free

How to use it: In the menu, THE ROUTES. The list of all seven opens; go into one and you get its whole map, the profile of the entire route and its stages, so you can scroll down to the one you want.

  2. Every stage in full Free

How to use it: From a route page, or by searching the name of the town. Each stage gives you where it goes from and to, the kilometres, how much climbing and descending there is, and everything along the way in kilometre order.

  3. The profile with the services on it Free

How to use it: Inside the stage page, near the top. The elevation drawing carries every bar, hostel and fountain at its exact kilometre: tap a point and its page opens.

  4. The stretches with nothing Free

How to use it: It appears on its own, inside the stage, when there is a long stretch with no water and no food. It is not typed in by hand: it is worked out from the real distance between places that are open.

  5. Which route do I take? Free

How to use it: In the menu, under PREPARE. You put in the days you have and the kilometres you walk a day, and it tells you which routes fit whole and where to start the ones that do not.

  6. What does the Camino cost? Free

How to use it: In the menu, under PREPARE. You pick a route and a way of travelling and out comes the budget, day by day, using the prices the hostels and bars publish themselves.

  7. When to go Free

How to use it: In the menu, under PREPARE. Month by month: temperature, rain, daylight hours, how many people there are and how many beds are open, from the guide's own data.

  8. Getting there and getting back Free

How to use it: On each route page, further down. How to get to the starting point and how to get back from Santiago: train, bus, plane and who runs them.

  9. The preparation guides Free

How to use it: In the menu, PREPARE. It is the front page of the written guides: the backpack, feet, the phrasebook, the credencial, with a dog and by bike.

  10. The weight of your pack Free

How to use it: Inside PREPARE, "backpack weight". You put in your own weight, tick what you are carrying, and it adds up the total and the percentage: that is where you see the three kilos too many.

  11. The words you need Free

How to use it: Inside PREPARE, "phrasebook". The bare minimum you need to be able to say, in your language and in Spanish, to show at the desk.

  12. Where the routes split Free

How to use it: It appears on its own, inside the stage where the route splits in two. It says where each branch goes, how many kilometres and days each has, and where they join again.

  13. The search box Free

How to use it: The magnifying glass in the menu, top right. It searches routes, stages, towns, hostels and the site's own screens all at once: "Astorga" works and so does "washing machine".

  14. A page for every town Free

How to use it: In the menu, under PLACES, "the towns". Every town has its own page: which stage it falls in, how far from Santiago and everything that is open there.

  15. Hostels, bars, shops and services Free

How to use it: In the menu, PLACES, with its four groups. The whole list can be filtered, sorted and seen on the map.

  16. Filter by what a place has Free

How to use it: Above any list of places. Tick what you need — washing machine, dogs allowed, step-free, no bunks, bike storage, stamps the credencial — and the list narrows itself.

  17. What each place charges Free

How to use it: On the place's page, the prices tab. The business puts them in itself and every line carries the date it was last touched.

  18. Which months it opens Free

How to use it: On the place's page, among the details. Which months it opens; and when it is not known, it says so instead of leaving a blank.

  19. The reviews Free

How to use it: At the bottom of every page. They read without an account, with the rating, the date of the visit and the host's reply when there is one.

  20. Ask anything Free

How to use it: The question-mark icon in the menu. You write the question in your language and it answers with what is in this guide, saying where it got it from.

  21. Your own itinerary Free

How to use it: In your panel, MY TRIP. You pick a route and a start date and it proposes the days; then you drag them by hand until they fit the days you have.

  22. What YOUR trip costs Free

How to use it: Inside your trip, in the editor itself. The budget for YOUR days, with the prices of the places on YOUR stages, not for some generic trip.

  23. What it actually cost Free

How to use it: In your panel, SPENDING. You note down the bed, the food and the rest of the day in thirty seconds. With what everyone notes down, "what it costs" becomes a real median.

  24. The route sheet on paper Free

How to use it: Inside your trip, the print button. Out comes the itinerary on paper: each day with its kilometres, its towns and its phone numbers, to carry folded up with no battery.

  25. Your trip in your phone's calendar Free

How to use it: Inside your trip. You download an .ics file and the days go into your phone's calendar with their date and their notes.

  26. Share your Camino with your family Free

How to use it: Inside your trip. You get a link that anyone can open with no account and nothing to install: at home they see where you are and where you are sleeping.

  27. The track as GPX Free

How to use it: On the stage page and on the route page, "download GPX". It downloads the track for your watch or GPS; best done the night before, with a signal.

  28. Maps without a signal Free

How to use it: On the stage page and on the route page, "offline maps". It downloads the real tiles, not a picture: the next day the map pans and zooms with no coverage.

  29. Your itinerary as GPX Free

How to use it: Inside your trip. The GPX of YOUR whole itinerary, cut where you sleep, not the book's stages.

While you walk

What you use with your boots on and the phone in your hand.

  1. Today mode Free

How to use it: In your panel, the first entry: TODAY. It shows the day you are on according to your trip, with what you need to know about it, instead of an index to search through.

  2. The companion Free

How to use it: Inside the stage, once you are signed in. A block that updates itself and says at most three things, the most urgent first: the daylight left, the dry stretch ahead, whether there are beds.

  3. Where am I? Free

How to use it: Inside the stage, "where am I?". You tap it, give the GPS permission once, and it answers which kilometre you are at, how much is left and where the next fountain is.

  4. The weather for the stage Free

How to use it: Inside the stage. The forecast for today and tomorrow at the start point and the end point, not at the provincial capital.

  5. The fountain reports Free

How to use it: On the stage and on the fountain's page. Whether it was running the last time somebody walked past, and when that was; after ten days it stops counting.

  6. Report whether the fountain ran Free

How to use it: On the fountain's page, two taps: it was running or it was not. You have just drunk from it, so you know; and that is what makes tomorrow's report worth something.

  7. The stage noticeboard Free

How to use it: Inside the stage. What is happening today: an arrow knocked down, roadworks, mud, a loose dog, a hostel closed. Each notice expires according to what it is.

  8. Tips from people who walked it Free

How to use it: Inside the stage, below the noticeboard. The things that do not expire: where the fountain really is, which bar opens at six. Reading them asks for nothing.

  9. Leave a tip Free

How to use it: Inside the stage, in the tips. You write your own or vote on someone else's with "this helped me": the useful ones rise.

  10. Post on the board Free

How to use it: Inside the stage, on the noticeboard. You open the notice, say what kind it is and tell it; whoever passes tomorrow confirms it or closes it.

  11. The Camino today Free

How to use it: In the menu, under PREPARE, "the Camino today". The bed reports, the water reports and the noticeboards of all 7 routes, together and from today.

  12. Lost and found Free

How to use it: In the menu, under PREPARE, "lost and found". What has been lost and found on every route, with the place and the day.

  13. Report an item Free

How to use it: In lost and found, "post". You say what it is, where it happened and how to reach you; the notice expires on its own after a while.

  14. Emergencies on the stage Free

How to use it: Inside the stage. 112, the pharmacies and the health centres that fall on that stage, with the number dialable in one tap.

  15. What is closed today Free

How to use it: Inside the stage. Whether it is a public holiday in that district that day and what will be closed, which is what decides whether there is bread.

  16. Mass and the pilgrim blessing Free

How to use it: Inside the stage. Which church has mass and the pilgrim blessing, at what time, and the date it was checked.

  17. How to get out of here Free

How to use it: Inside the stage, "how to get out of here". The bus, the train and the taxi from the end of the stage, for the day you cannot go on.

  18. Backpack transfer Free

How to use it: Inside the stage. Who carries the backpack to the next stage, how much they charge, up to what weight and their phone number.

  19. Call from the list Free

How to use it: In the list of places itself, without opening the page. The phone and the WhatsApp one tap away, which is the only thing anyone does while walking.

  20. Whether there is room today Free

How to use it: On the hostel's page. Today's report: room available, filling up or full, according to what people walking past have said.

  21. It’s full: where there are still beds Free

How to use it: It appears on its own on the page of a hostel that has said "full". The places further ahead on the same stage that have said today they had room, with their phone numbers, so you do not walk back.

  22. Say how the beds are Free

How to use it: On the hostel's page, one tap. You have just called or walked past the door: you say how it is and save the person behind you the trouble.

  23. Ask for a bed without phoning Free

How to use it: On the page of a hostel that accepts them. You put in how many of you there are, which night and what time you arrive; the host's phone rings and they answer yes or no. It is not a booking: nothing is paid and nobody is bound.

  24. Translate what people write Free

How to use it: Under any review, notice or tip written by a person. You tap "translate" and it comes out in your language without leaving the page.

  25. Correct a listing Free

How to use it: On any place's page, "correct". A phone number that changed or an old opening time gets fixed by whoever walks past; it is recorded, and the owner sees it and can dispute it.

  26. Write a review Free

How to use it: On the place's page, "write a review". You put the rating, the date of the visit and whatever you want to say; it goes out under your name.

  27. Say what the route was like Free

How to use it: In "Reviews", you pick the route and say what walking it was like: the rating, the month and year you did it and whatever you want to tell. One per person and route, editable whenever you like. It is checked before it goes out. If you have any stamp from that route, it is marked as you having been there.

  28. Was this review any use? Free

How to use it: Under every review, "did this help you?". The ones that help rise and the ones that do not sink.

  29. Write to the hostel Free

How to use it: On the place's page, "write to them". The message reaches their inbox without their email appearing on any page.

  30. Talk to the business in your language Free

How to use it: On the business's page, "Talk to the business". Write, or press "Speak" and say what you want: the phone turns it into text. What they answer comes out in your language, with the original underneath; press "Listen" to hear it, or tick "Read aloud whatever comes in". Your conversations stay in your panel, under MY CONVERSATIONS.

  31. Save what matters to you Free

How to use it: The heart on every place page and every stage. Tap it and it stays in your panel, under FAVOURITES.

  32. Stamp with the QR Free

How to use it: You scan the QR the place has on its door, or you add it from your credencial. The stamp is recorded with its date, and if the house gives something for stamping, it says so right there.

  33. Your digital credential Free

How to use it: In your panel, CREDENCIAL. The stamps from the whole trip, each with its day and its place.

  34. The Compostela counter Free

How to use it: Inside the credencial, at the top. It counts how many of the last hundred kilometres you have done and warns you from which town you have to stamp twice a day.

  35. Your real pace and the daylight Free

How to use it: Inside the credencial. Your real pace, measured from the times on your stamps, and the daylight hours left today.

  36. The itinerary corrects itself Free

How to use it: Inside your trip. It compares what you actually walk with what you planned and, if it does not add up, trims the itinerary with one button.

  37. The night-before warning Free

How to use it: You do not have to go looking for it: it arrives on its own the afternoon before. What you need to know about tomorrow — heat, rain, a dry stretch, a holiday, a notice from the board. If there is nothing to say, nothing arrives.

  38. Alerts on your phone Free

How to use it: In your panel, ALERTS. You give permission once on that phone and from then on alerts arrive with the guide closed. The permission belongs to that browser, not to the account.

  39. The trip diary Free

How to use it: In your panel, DIARY. One entry a day with the stage filled in for you; you write what you like and it is saved with the date.

  40. Free-bed alerts Free

How to use it: On the hostel's page or on the stage, "alert me". When somebody says there are beds left, your phone rings.

  41. The pocket translator Free

How to use it: In your panel, TRANSLATOR. You type, you speak or you photograph a sign, and it comes out in the language you choose.

Arriving in Santiago

The last day and what is left afterwards.

  1. Arriving in Santiago Free

How to use it: In the menu, under PREPARE. The Pilgrim's Office, the Compostela, the mass and what to do with the last day.

  2. Your credential as a PDF Free

How to use it: Inside your credencial, "print". All your stamps on one sheet, to keep or to show at the Office.

  3. The parchment Free

How to use it: In your panel, “The parchment”. It is earned by walking and there is one per pilgrim: you must complete 37 stages adding up those of all the Ways, from at least 2 different Ways; each complete stage carries 4 stamps — one on leaving, one on arriving and 2 more along the route, at 2 different houses —; among the complete ones must be the stage that enters Santiago; and take a selfie in front of the cathedral, which is the ending. Then it opens: you write your name, set the dates and a line of your own, and it can be viewed and printed, with the stages, the kilometres and the Ways you did it on. Not before: without that it cannot be seen, printed or downloaded, because if it could it would certify nothing. It is tied to the email you confirmed the account with, and at the foot it carries that email masked and a code anyone can use from outside to check it is genuine. The stages of Finisterre-Muxía count, but that Way does not enter Santiago and cannot be the one of the final stage. The credential stamp put there by scanning a house’s code also counts: it stands for the start or the finish of that stage, depending on where the house is. One per stage, so no stage is completed without shells. A Way shorter than 300 km is walked whole or does not count: every one of its stages complete, each with its stamps.

  4. Stamping at the shells Free

How to use it: On the wall of member businesses there is a scallop shell with a code inside. Point your phone at it, choose whether you are leaving, arriving or passing through, and the stamp is recorded with the name of the house, the town, the kilometre and the day. You need an account, the free one is enough, and you can create it from that same screen.

  5. The diary as a PDF Free

How to use it: Inside the diary, "print". Your whole trip in one document, stage by stage, to keep when you get home.

The guide from the inside

Languages, installing it, your account and your data.

  1. 18 languages Free

How to use it: The language selector, top right. It changes the whole guide, not a menu: every route, every stage and every notice. The address changes too, so you can share it in your language.

  2. Install it as an app Free

How to use it: The browser offers it: on Android, "add to home screen"; on iPhone, "share" and then "add to home screen"; on a computer, the install icon in the address bar. There is no app store.

  3. It works without coverage Free

How to use it: There is nothing to do: whatever you opened earlier is still there when there is no signal. And if you open something that is not, you get a screen that says so instead of the browser's error.

  4. Light or dark Free

How to use it: The light and dark switch, at the top. It stays saved on that device.

  5. The free account Free

How to use it: Top right, "sign in". Email and password, no card and no trial days. It is what opens the services, and it is free forever.

  6. Your data is yours Free

How to use it: In your panel, PROFILE. From there you download all your data in one file or delete the whole account, without asking anyone's permission.

  7. Your invoice Free

How to use it: In your panel, INVOICES. Every payment with its downloadable invoice, with the details exactly as they were on the day it was paid.

Part two · For businesses on the Camino

If you run a place on the Camino

Hostels, bars, shops and everything that opens its door to a pilgrim.

  1. Your place is already there Free

How to use it: There is nothing to do: your listing is already there, with the public details we were able to gather, in 18 languages. Look for it by the name of your house.

  2. Claim your listing Free

How to use it: On your listing, "this house is mine". You need a free account and we check by calling the number already on the listing: you read out a code and it becomes yours.

  3. Keeping your listing’s details right Free

How to use it: In your panel, MY BUSINESS. With the free account you manage the name, the type, the address, the town, the phone, one header image and the services.

  4. What makes your listing sell With the business membership

How to use it: On the same screen, further down. Membership opens up the description, the photos of the house, the prices, the opening times, the WhatsApp, the social accounts and the languages you speak.

  5. Today’s offer With the business membership

How to use it: In your panel, inside your business, "today's offer". One sentence with an expiry time that goes out on your stage's list. Only one live at a time.

  6. Publish your prices With the business membership

How to use it: In your panel, inside your business, "prices". You put in the bed, the menu, the washing machine; every line keeps its date so people can see it is current.

  7. What others corrected on your listing With the business membership

How to use it: In your panel, CORRECTIONS. Who changed what on your listing and when, so you can accept it or undo it.

  8. Reply to reviews With the business membership

How to use it: In your panel, REVIEWS. You answer under each one and your reply goes out next to it, under your house's name.

  9. How many people look at you With the business membership

How to use it: In your panel, STATISTICS. How many people open your listing, from which countries and in which language they read it.

  10. How many called you, not how many looked With the business membership

How to use it: On the same statistics screen. Besides who looked, how many tapped the phone, the WhatsApp or your website: that is the figure that looks like a booking.

  11. Featured position With the business membership

How to use it: It comes with membership, with nothing to set: your house appears in the first positions of your stage and of your type of business among the services on the stage.

  12. Appear in the stage before With the business membership

How to use it: In your panel, inside your business, "sponsorship". You pick one of the stages before yours and your house appears there, which is where tomorrow night gets decided.

  13. The venue's two stickers With the business membership

How to use it: In your panel, inside your business. You download and print the two twenty-centimetre stickers: the venue one, with the QR that opens your listing, and the stamp one. A4 sticker paper, cut along the line and done.

  14. The stamp sticker With the business membership

How to use it: In your panel, “Download the stamp sticker”. Out comes the scallop shell with the code inside, with the 18 languages and the domain; the bare shell can also be downloaded as SVG to take to a print shop. Put it where you decide: on the door or on the counter. A pilgrim recognises a shell from ten metres without knowing the language.

  15. Stamp here and it’s ten euros With the business membership

How to use it: In your panel, inside your business, the field "what you give for stamping". A short sentence that goes out on your listing and on the stamping screen, at the moment they are standing at your door.

  16. The place's inbox With the business membership

How to use it: In your panel, INBOX. What pilgrims write to you, with their email so you can answer them directly.

  17. Take bed requests With the business membership

How to use it: In your panel, inside your business, the box "take bed requests". From then on they arrive in REQUESTS and on your phone, and you answer yes or no with one tap.

  18. Answer each pilgrim in your language With the business membership

How to use it: In your panel, CONVERSATIONS. Every pilgrim who writes to you shows up there, with what they said already in your language and the original underneath. Answer by typing or with "Speak": it reaches them translated into theirs. Your phone rings when they write, if you have alerts on.
